Software Engineering - Scope
History.
It has been over 50 years since the public revelation of the ENIAC computer. Within those years, software engineering has been transformed from an obscure craft to a ubiquitous technology. Software is used in everything from airplanes to smart cards and its growth and complexity are accelerating rapidly. The Mercury space program of the early 60's had about 1.4 million instructions and today's international space station, has an estimated 78 million instructions.
Current.
Many of today's systems are so complex that it is impossible for a single person to comprehend. The amount of code in most consumer appliances is doubling every 2 years. The rapid growth in size and complexity requires project management, software engineering, and systems engineering skills to keep projects on track.
